The reality is that I buy most of my routers at thrift shops for $5-$10 and throw OpenWRT or DD-WRT on them. The combination of an appliance router and WRT firmware makes for a capable little router.
That's true. I currently have a router that I put DD-WRT on, and it's very capable. A couple years ago, I also found out that DD-WRT lets you configure a VPN so that the router itself can connect to a VPN, and I thought that was cool.
I had also used Tomato (firmware) with my previous router, and I thought that was a pretty good router firmware too.
